McGalliard Falls / Meytre Grist Mill
Originally constructed by Fred Meytre in 1906 and rebuilt when
McGalliard Falls Park was created in 1982, the Meytre Grist Mill
is not only a tribute to the past but a working attraction for the
present. The mill stopped production in 1941, possibly since Mr.
Meytre had grown too old to operate the mill without the help of
young men World War II had taken away.
Originally, the mill ground corn for corn meal, wheat for flour,
and hammer meal for livestock feed, but today FDA regulations limit
the mill's output to products not for human consumption.
The mill has operated both by water power and turbine power with
a 1916 flood taking the original wheel away and spurring a switch
to turbine power.
McGalliard Falls is a popular gathering spot for families and friends looking for a place to have a picnic and enjoy some recreational activities. Standing at about 40 feet high, McGalliard Falls was also a favorite hangout for the Waldensian settlers. The settlers would meet at the falls on Sunday to wade in the creek, socialize in their best clothing, stroll through the woods, sun on the rocks, or watch the falls. Come enjoy some of the same activities as the Waldensian Settlers at McGalliard Falls! The park has four lighted tennis courts, a volleyball court, picnic facilities and restrooms in addition to the natural attraction of the falls.
The picnic shelter may be rented by contacting the Valdese Recreation Department at 879-2132.
Each June, in the creek above the falls, the Town of Valdese holds a fishing tournament.
