Waldensian men brought their passion for the game of bocce to the new world in 1893 with the arrival and settlement of the Town of Valdese. The town's primary courts have evolved from clearings in a pine forest to three well - groomed and covered clay courts at Le Phare Des Alpes - LPDA for short - which translates to "the lighthouse of the Alps". The descendants and other members of the LPDA have kept this sport alive in Valdese for over 100 years.
The LPDA located at 301 Laurel Street SE, just a couple blocks off Main Street in Valdese, and will host the annual Waldensian Heritage Bocce Tournament in conjunction with the Waldensian Festival of the Glorious Return. Local and regional teams will compete for top honors in this all day event. The tournament will be played "rain or shine". Please join us to participate or observe the game of Bocce, enjoy the traditional Waldensian food of soutisso, and sample French style bread baked on site in a traditional outdoor wood fired oven. Adult beverages will be available. You can dine indoors at the LPDA meeting hall and learn more about the unique history of this organization.
